10 Reasons why you need to be watching Riverdale
While there are so many great shows on TV & many consider this the new golden age of television, I honestly miss good old fashioned soapy teen dramas. The only ones on currently are a few shows on Freeform (Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters & Switched at Birth-all which I love) but they have all been on for several years and a bit past their prime (and 2 are ending this year). Gossip Girl & 90120 were on a few years ago, but I never really liked either of them.
I miss the good old days before the supernatural shows (Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf) as well as the super hero shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) took over when there used to be teen & high school dramas, like Dawson’s Creek, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, The OC & One Tree Hill. These shows all were about small towns, relationships, scandal, & all that good stuff.
Over the last year or so, I’ve stopped watching most of the dramas on TV that I had been watching for years, like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Quantico, Once Upon a Time, all the CW shows & many others that have lost my attention. I was watching so many shows but they all started to blend together and nothing really got me excited to turn the TV on so I just basically gave up on all of them. The only shows that kept my attention were shows like “Bones” as well as reality shows like “shark tank” and shows like 20/20 and Dateline; real life crime shows. Oh and Stranger Things of course.
However, Riverdale is a show that I’m finally excited about. It combines all of my favorite things, drama & scandal, relationships, murder mystery, small towns, & of course the classic characters themselves, which I have been obsessed with since I was a child.
My Background with the Archie Comics
I was really not a comic book person growing up. I read a few Garfield & Calvin & Hobbes books but that was about the extent of it.
Then my aunt gave me a Betty & Veronica comic book for Christmas one year and I loved it. I asked my parents and they let me do a monthly subscription of Archie Comics Digest. I got my brother into the books as well and we began buying them at bookstores too. I have so many fond memories reading stories about Archie and the gang and so much of my childhood had those books in them.
However, I read them at a time when they weren’t all that popular. None of my friends were reading them and it had been around for so many years, my parents generation had read them. But the stories were timeless and classic.
When I heard they were doing a TV show about Archie, I was both curious, excited and skeptical. My biggest fear was that it would be all wrong and that it wouldn’t find an audience (since no teens in this generation probably read the comics) and be cancelled (that is still a fear of mine) before it even got good.
So when I tuned in for the pilot episode, I was surprised how much I liked it and wanted the next episode. This show would be a fantastic binge watch, but sadly I’ll be waiting week to week.
Need more convincing? Here’s 10 Reasons why you need to be watching Riverdale
- Based on the Archie Comic
Archie Comics started in 1941 and continues to be published this day. There has never been a been a successful adaptation for screen with Archie and the gang.
Other characters in the show include Josie & The Pussycats as well as Sabrina the Teenage witch, both of which had successful films and tv shows in the 1990s & early 2000s, but there has never been a TV show or movie made about the main comics.
- Critical Acclaim.
This show has gotten great reviews from audiences and critics alike. Many comment on the cinematography and overall look of the show, which is far better than most on tv
- Greg Berlanti
Basically everything Greg Berlanti touches turns to gold. He is not only the creator of Dawson’s Creek and Everwood, he also runs all the super hero shows on the CW. I will basically watch anything that this man has been a part of.
Don’t even get me started about the fashion on this show. It’s so amazing, especially Veronica’s outfits. They perfectly collaborate between the old school 40s look and modern day. So awesome
- Murder Mystery
I’m always up for a good murder mystery. Figuring out the clues to who done it really is something I love. Adding it to the main plots of this show was genius
Archie having an affair with Ms Grundy (which we found out was not actually ms grundy in the last episode), drama with the parents including Veronica’s mom and dad, Betty’s mom, Archie’s dad and the reveal of Jughead’s dad this past episode are all intriguing as they all seem to have also gone to high school together.
Also curious about Betty’s sister and Jughead’s backstory.
- Barb is alive! (Kind of)
I was so excited when I found out that Barb from Stranger Things was cast as Ethel on Riverdale. Such amazing casting choice!
- Girl Power, Diversity & Feminism
I love how much this show really pushes the edge and has a really feminist edge to it. The episode about the slut shaming incident was really powerful and something not always addressed on TV. Also love that they made Josie and the Pussycats African American, it’s really hard to picture them differently now.
- Love Triangles galore
Betty, Archie and Veronica were basically the original love triangle. Before Lucas-Peyton-Brooke or Dawson-Pacey-Joey, they were the ones people picked sides on. What I love about this version is that Jughead is now in the mix and some spoilers have confirmed that #Bughead (Betty and Jughead) are a thing. After I found this out, I totally was all for that relationship! I feel like Archie isn’t right for either of them on this show. We’ll see who ends up with who!
- Cole Sprouse
Was anyone else a huge Sweet Life of Zack and Cody Fan? Most of the cast are total unknowns except for Cole, who we get to see acting as an adult after years away on screen. Plus that hair?! When did Cole become so good looking? LOL
But seriously, I recommend watching the show. It’s not for everyone, but if you are fans of teen dramas like the ones I mentioned above, it would be hard for you not to like this one.
